Shoulder Straps

German shoulder straps went through a series of changes throughout the course of World War One. For a German Infantryman's Feldgrau shoulder straps, the regiment number, or sometimes a heraldic cypher that represented that regiment, was sewn in red thread.

Before the war and until 1914, the Model 1907 Feldrock shoulder straps were removable with a coloured piping around the edges that corresponded to the Armeekorps to which the regiment belonged (top row left, Reserve Infantry Regiment 120).

In January, 1915, the Armeekorps piping was no longer to be applied, and the shoulder straps, void of any piping, were typically sewn directly to the shoulder (top row right, Grenadier Regiment 101, and middle row).

In September, 1915, the official issue Model 1915 Bluse shoulder straps still had red numbers, but were made narrower, and now trimmed in white piping to indicate infantry regiments (bottom row). Officially they were removable and fastened loosely under a factory-attached cloth loop at the shoulder seam.
