Mantel Model 1908/15
Model 1908 Mantel with 1915 Modifications.
The Model 1908/15 modified Mantel was only produced for a short period of time in 1915, much like the 1907/15 modified tunic. From March-September of 1915, this model was introduced as a modification of the 1908 Mantel, before the simplified M 1915 Mantel was introduced later in the fall of 1915. The M1908/15 modified Mantel had a small collar faced with the same material as the rest of the garment. It was tailored with a narrow front closed by a single row of 6 smooth buttons. It was cut with plain cuffs, with concealed closure tabs like found on the Model 1907/15 modified tunic. The coat was drawn at the back with a belt fastened with a single smooth button. Shoulder straps for Reserve Infantry Regiment 261. |
Rear Belt Hook Support Details.
To each side of the rear belt was a slit to allow the equipment belt support hooks from the tunic inside to protrude through and be used. These inner reinforcement pieces are made of leather.
Notice also the repairs the soldier made where the rear belt support buttons of his tunic wore holes in the Mantel.

Stamps and Markings.
As with all issue garments, M1908/15 Mantel typically has a series of depot issue stampings, which sometimes include regiment identification.
This MANTEL displays an ARMEEKORPS issue stamp believed to be B.A.II. West-Pomerania. Unfortunately there is no legible date stamp recognizable, and the size stampings are very difficult to decipher. For a complete list of ARMEEKORPS districts see section: INFANTRY ORGANIZATION.
The soldier who wore this Mantel wrote his initials "H. T." in the back on the lining.

Cuff Details.
The plain cuffs have a unique way of closing whereby a small cloth tab can be unbuttoned from inside the cuff, pushed through a slit in the cuff, and then tightened to a button on the outside of the cuff. The similar system is to be found on the Model 1907 tunics with 1915 modifications.
