Infantry Officer's Schirmmütze
Soft-brimmed Visor Cap.
This Infanterie officer’s M1908 Schirmmütze was tailored from high quality Feldgrau wool and has a red center band and piping. The example shown above has had its issue chinstrap removed by its owner to give it a more relaxed “field service” look. Moreover, the visor is of soft flexible leather adding to the Frontsoldat look.
In 1917 the red infantry band and piping on the Schirmmütze was replaced with a standardized “all branch of services” Roserederen – (light Grey/Green) 'abzeichentuch' – (badge cloth). For remaining issued Schirmmütze still in service, a Feldgrau camouflaged band was created, essentially as camouflage, to cover the infantry-red band. This Feldgrau camouflage band, similar to that for the Krätzchen, was attached with a metal buckle, and had a buttonhole in the middle center for the State Kokarde.

KRÄTZSCHEN
For remaining issued Krätzschcen still in service after the 1917 version was issued, a Field-Gray camouflaged band was created to cover the infantry-red band, essentially as camouflage. This field-gray camouflage band was attached with a metal buckle, and had a buttonhole in the middle center for the State Kokarde.
This example above still has its issue camouflaged band affixed.
